There were some close games in the sectional championships Saturday night.
At Loogootee, North Daviess reclaimed the sectional championship by downing Barr Reeve in the title tilt 35-29. The Cougars move on to regional this weekend at Loogootee against Edinburgh at 10:00 am. Game two will feature Borden against Springs Valley. The Cougars beat Edinburgh Feb 19th 55-47. Good luck to North Daviess this weekend.
In the 2A finale at North Knox, Linton held off a big threat from South Knox edging out the Spartans 37-33. Linton will now face Providence at Southridge this Saturday at 11:30 am.
And in 3A at Princeton, the Pike Central Chargers surged and gave all they had falling short to Sullivan in the championship in overtime 55-53. Sullivan will face North Harrison in game two of the Washington Regional on Saturday at noon. Game one at Washington will pit Bosse against Lawrenceburg.
Iowa defeated Indiana 74-67 to win the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Monika Czinano led Iowa with 30 points and 10 rebounds, and National Player of the Year candidate Caitlin Clark added 18 points for the second-seeded Hawkeyes. Grace Berger scored 20 points to lead the Hoosiers, but fouled out in the final minute. The fifth-seeded Hoosiers were going for their fourth win in as many days, and had already beat fourth-seeded Maryland and top seeded Ohio State to make it to the Big Ten title game for the first time in 20 years. The Hoosiers are 22-8 and await their NCAA tournament seed next Sunday. The top-16 teams nationally host the first two rounds, and IU has never hosted NCAA tourney games.
The Washington Wizards defeated the Indiana Pacers 133-123 Sunday night in the nation’s capital. The Pacers were within three and had the ball with two minutes to go, but could get no closer. Malcolm Brogdon led all scorers with 27 points. Indiana shot just 10-for-31 from 3-point range, and was outscored 39-26 in the third quarter. Goga Bitadze had scored 17 of his career-high 20 points in the first half and made all seven field goal attempts. Tyrese Haliburton added 15 points and 11 assists for Indiana, which dropped to 22-44. Kristaps Porzingis scored 25 points in his Wizards debut. The Blue and Gold went 1-3 on the road trip, and return home to play the slumping Cleveland Cavaliers Tuesday night.
Alex Bowman outdueled Kyle Larson in the final two laps to win in the NASCAR Cup Series at Las Vegas. Kyle Busch looked poised to pull away for victory at his home track, but the 12th caution of the race came out with three laps to go to force overtime. The Hendrick Motorsports trio of Larson, Bowman and William Byron each took just two tires on the final pit stop before overtime, and Busch dropped back to fourth after taking four tires. Larson finished second, Ross Chastain came home third, and the Vegas native Busch settled for fourth. Chastain led a race-high 83 of 274 laps and won stage two for the upstart TrackHouse Racing team. The win was Bowman’s seventh career victory. The Cup Series wraps up its West Coast swing next Sunday at Phoenix Raceway.
