The Indiana Pacers rallied late, but lost at home to the Cleveland Cavaliers 127-124. The Blue and Gold rattled off a 10-0 run to take a two-point lead with a minute left, but were outscored 7-2 over the final minute. With the game tied at 124, Pacers forward Jalen Smith intentionally fouled Darius Garland with 14 seconds left, despite the fact that the Cavs were already in the bonus. Garland knocked down both free throws to put Cleveland on top, and he finished with a career-high 41 points. Tyrese Haliburton led Indiana with 25, but his shot from beyond midcourt at the buzzer was well short. The Pacers have lost 12 out of 15 to drop to 22-45. With the victory, the Cavs completed the four-game season sweep of Indiana. The Pacers are off until Saturday, when the Blue and Gold play the Spurs in San Antonio.
It’s now or never for Butler. The Bulldogs face Xavier Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Butler is 13-18 and is the ninth seed going up against the eighth-seeded Musketeers. The Dawgs enter New York on a five-game losing streak, and the next loss for Butler will end the season. Xavier is 18-12, but is also on a skid, having lost five out of six. The Musketeers have already beat the Dawgs twice this season, and need the victory to help secure an NCAA tournament berth. Xavier has numerous Indiana connections. The Muskies are coached by Danville native and Butler grad Travis Steele. Castle grad Jack Nunge leads Xavier in scoring, and former Southport standout Paul Scruggs averages nearly 12 points per game. Xavier and Butler tip off at 4:30 p.m. Eastern, with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Providence Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Multiple Purdue and Indiana players were honored by the Big Ten Tuesday. Purdue sophomore guard Jaden Ivey was named a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection. Boilermakers center Zach Edey and IU forward Trayce Jackson-Davis were named to the conference’s second team by both the Big Ten and the Associated Press. It is the second consecutive All-Big Ten honor for Jackson-Davis, and both Ivey and Edey made the all-freshman team a year ago. Purdue’s Trevion Williams was a third-team pick and was tabbed as the league’s sixth man of the year. Boilers sharpshooter Sasha Stefanovic was an honorable mention pick, along with IU’s Xavier Johnson and Race Thompson. Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis and Greg Gard were named the Big Ten Player and Coach of the Year, respectively.
