Mary Bassler

Mary Lou (Louise) Bassler, 91, passed away March 2, 2022. She was born in Washington on July 7, 1930, to Joseph S. and Catherine M. (Schneider) Bassler.
A 1948 graduate of Washington Catholic High School, Mary Lou graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Evansville. She did her graduate work at Villanova University, near Philadelphia. She had a real love for children with special needs, having worked with them in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
In retirement, Mary Lou enjoyed tending to her flowers and volunteering at the gift shop at the Benedictine Monastery in Ferdinand. She also volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul for a number of years. Mary Lou was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
Those who mourn Mary Lou’s passing include her brother, Bill Bassler of Washington; nieces, Mary Jo (Paul) Reynolds; Patti (Dean) Edwards; Karen (Chris) Brown; nephews, Kevin Carey; Chris Bassler; Eric (Julie) Bassler. There are 16 great nieces and nephews and 10 great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Margaret Lucille (Bassler) Carey and Sr. Mary Elise (Lena Mae) Bassler; and a brother, Joseph F. Bassler.
Mary Lou gifted her remains to the Indiana University School of Medicine for their use in research and education.
Visitation will be at 9:00 am, Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:00 am. Father Paul Ferguson will be the celebrant. Burial will be at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Mary Lou’s memory can be made to the Sisters of St Benedict, 802 East 10th Street, Ferdinand, Indiana 47532.
