The North Daviess Cougars are semi state bound! The Cougars advanced to the championship with a narrow 38-37 win over Edinburgh in game one. The championship was not as close as North Daviess shut down Borden 43-32. Good luck this weekend keep rolling! North Daviess will play Jac-Cen-Del on Saturday at Seymour. Tip-off is at 4:00 pm.
Sullivan won the 3A Regional championship at the Hatchet House. The Golden Arrows beat North Harrison 52-49 again on a last second shot by stand out guard Randy Kelley. In the championship, Sullivan defeated Evansville Bosse 89-85. At Washington on Saturday in the 3A semi state, Sullivan plays Beech Grove at 1:00 pm, while Indianapolis Cathedral will play Bloomington North at 3:00 pm.
The Washington Lady Hatchet Junior High teams competed in the state tournament this weekend in Bloomington. The 8th graders are state champs as they topped the Faith Christian Eagles for the title. The 7th grade fell just short in their championship run losing to a tough Gibson Southern team and going 3-1.
Iowa defeated Purdue 75-66 in the Big Ten Tournament championship Sunday in Indianapolis. The Boilermakers went on a 7-0 run in less than a minute to cut an eight-point deficit to one with three minutes to go, but the Hawkeyes responded with seven straight of their own to secure the win. Keegan Murray led fifth-seeded Iowa with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Jaden Ivey paced the third-seeded Boilers with 20, but made just 1-of-8 3-pointers. Purdue had 17 turnovers and made 5-of-20 from 3-point range. Zach Edey had 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Boilers, which dropped to 27-7. Purdue was going for its second Big Ten tournament championship in its fifth title game appearance. Iowa defeated Northwestern, Rutgers, Indiana and Purdue over four straight days to win its first title since 2006.
Purdue picked up a number three seed in the NCAA Tournament and will take on Yale Friday at 2 p.m. in Milwaukee. The winner of Friday’s game will take on either sixth-seeded Texas or number 11 seed Virginia Tech Sunday for a trip to the Sweet 16 in the East Region. Baylor and Kentucky are the top two seeds in the region, which will be contested in Philadelphia. The Boilermakers are 27-7 after falling to Iowa in the Big Ten championship game. It is the fifth straight tournament that Matt Painter’s squad has earned a top-four seed. Yale is 19-11 and beat Princeton to win the Ivy League tournament.
For the first time since 2016, the Indiana Hoosiers are going dancing. IU earned a 12th seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play Wyoming Tuesday night at 9:10 pm. in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio. With a victory Tuesday, IU would face Saint Mary’s in the Round of 64 Thursday in Portland, Oregon. The Hoosiers are 20-13 after they lost a heartbreaker to Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals Saturday. Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon banked in a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to win 81-78. The Wyoming Cowboys are 25-8, and lost in the Mountain West Conference semifinals Friday.
Notre Dame made it into the Big Dance as one of the last at-large teams to earn a bid, and the 11th-seeded Fighting Irish will face Rutgers Wednesday night at 9:10 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio. The winner will advance to play sixth-seeded Alabama Friday afternoon in San Diego in the West Region. The Fighting Irish are 22-10, and lost to Virginia Tech in the ACC quarterfinals Thursday. Rutgers has one of the more unique resumes in the nation. The Scarlet Knights are 18-13 with some terrible non-conference losses, but Rutgers beat each of the top teams in the Big Ten to bolster its case for the tourney.
The Indiana Pacers rallied in the fourth quarter, but lost to the Atlanta Hawks 131-128 Sunday night in Atlanta. Trae Young scored 47 points on 7-for-10 3-point shooting and 14-for-14 from the free throw line. The Hawks led by as many as 19 in the first half, but the Pacers got within two in the final minute. Tyrese Haliburton missed what would have been a go-ahead 3-pointer with 32 seconds left, and Young hit four of his 14 free throws to ice the game. Haliburton and Buddy Hield each had 25 points to lead the Pacers, and Duane Washington Jr. added 22 off the bench. The Blue and Gold were on the second night of a back-to-back after beating the Spurs Saturday night in San Antonio. Indiana dropped to 23-46, and is 3-17 in games decided by four points or less. The Pacers return home to play Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies Tuesday night.
Mitchell, Indiana native Chase Briscoe pulled away on the final restart and won in the NASCAR Cup Series at Phoenix Raceway. It marked the first career Cup victory for the 27-year-old Briscoe. Briscoe became the 200th different driver to win a race in NASCAR’s top series. He is in his second year driving the number 14 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing, owned by his childhood racing idol and fellow Hoosier Tony Stewart. Ross Chastain finished second, followed by Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney and Kurt Busch. NASCAR heads back east to race at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday.
