Washington’s School Board heard updates on the move to grade level centers at last night’s meeting.
One of the new programs includes introduction of band and chorus at the fifth and sixth grade levels.
WHS Band Director Branden Burris explained the new course will begin in the fifth grade and that every student in the Washington Upper Elementary Center will have the opportunity to learn how to play various types of instruments and participate in chorus.
The music classes will meet twice a week.
In the sixth grade, Upper Elementary can choose either band or chorus as a daily class.
Special instruments with smaller dimensions to fit smaller hands will be provided to the elementary students.
Current North Elementary Principal Jay Wildman said there will also be an expansion of extra-curricular activities.
Traditional sports like basketball and volleyball will be offered.
Plans are for the grade level buildings to be open at 7:30 am each morning for parents to drop off students.
