Washington High School Principal Steve Peterson reported on a special opportunity open to WHS students at last Thursday’s School Board Meeting.
Based on the success of Washington High Schools Career Academy, the Chamber of Commerce has awarded WHS a special grant to help fund student internships with local businesses.
The grant is an Indiana EARN Grant and matches 50% of a student’s hourly rate.
Typically, these grants are a college level program.
Peterson said that the Chamber awarded only 20 grants throughout the state with most going to career centers or co-ops.
Washington was one of the few high schools in Indiana to receive the grant.
The grant will provide up to $1,500 a semester to help businesses offset the cost of salaries for the interns.
There is also a possibility for summer internships.
Peterson said that several local businesses have already signed up to be part of the internship program at WHS.
