Our Community Foundation has awarded a grant to Purdue Extension–Daviess County for a day long educational event in Washington that will provide participants with an increased understanding of the diverse population living in Daviess County.
The program, Exploring Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Together in Daviess County, includes cultural awareness training and education about immigration and an opportunity to hear first-hand from people in Daviess County’s immigrant community, as well as organizations serving them like the health department, schools, businesses, and the faith community.
According to Cindy Barber, Community Development Educator with Purdue Extension-Daviess County, the program will be very insightful. “Participants will hear from speakers with first-hand experience in serving Daviess County’s immigrant population – everything from customs and traditions to needs and gaps in services. We will also hear perspectives from those who have immigrated to our community which will be a great benefit to increasing our understanding of their beliefs and concerns.”
“Our Community Foundation is very pleased to support this program,” says Mary Smith, Executive Director. “As our Daviess County community grows to be more culturally diverse, it is critical that we appreciate and understand the different backgrounds of our neighbors. We believe this program is a big step forward in supporting a greater sense of appreciation and understanding of a diverse population.”
Barber says the program is set for March 29 and seating is very limited. For information, contact Purdue Extension Daviess County at (812) 254-8668.
