The North Daviess Cougars are State Champs! North Daviess knocked off Lafayette Central Catholic in double overtime 48-46. It came down to free throws, as Clark Barrett was fouled shooting a three pointer as time expired. Barrett was awarded the three free throws, hit the first, then a time-out was called by coach Dalrymple to ice him, and it worked as the second free toss was missed short leading to the Cougar championship. It was a game to be talked about for years to come, as both teams left it all on the floor. Devin Collins finished with 15 points to lead North Daviess, while Jaylen Mullen added 13. North Daviess ends the year at 27 and 3, and the community celebrated with a bon fire and welcome home celebration Saturday night on Main Street in Odon. Congratulations to the State Champs, the North Daviess Cougars.
The other games on the day were not as exciting. In 2A, Providence defeated Central Noble 62 to 49. In the 3A game, Beech Grove was crowned state champs with a 53 to 43 win over Mishawaka Marian. Lastly in the finale, Indianapolis Cathedral dominated Chesteron 65 to 31.
And then there were four…The Elite 8 round of the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament played out over the weekend and is down to the Final Four teams. Villanova will make its third Final Four appearance in the last six tournaments when they take on Kansas in the first game on Saturday. The second game will feature North Carolina against Duke; it’s the first time these two schools have ever met in the NCAA tournament. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski (Shuh-SHEF-ski) will have a record 13th appearance in the Final Four in his final season as a head coach.
Mike Woodson’s second year as head of the Indiana Hoosiers program will look different than his first. Over the past week, there have been coaching staff changes and players choosing to enter the transfer portal. As of Saturday Rob Phinisee, Khristian Lander, and Michael Durr announced their decision to pursue their academic and athletic careers elsewhere while fifth-year guard Parker Stewart is declining his final year of eligibility. Phinisee, a starter for a majority of games last year, saw his numbers decline in shooting percentage and points per game. On the coaching side, Woodson elevated three members of his personnel, Kenya Hunter, Yasir Rosemond, and Brian Walsh, to assistant coaching roles.
It’s official! He’s Back! Cardinals and Albert Pujols agree to a one-year major league deal for $2.5m, pending physical. He will be in Jupiter this week.
