Butler basketball coach Thad Matta has filled out his coaching staff by retaining Bulldogs assistant David Ragland, according to the IndyStar. The 40-year-old Ragland joined the Butler staff prior to last season. The Evansville native came to Butler after three seasons at Utah State, and also has previous assistant coaching stops at schools such as Valparaiso and Indiana State, plus a stint as the head coach at Vincennes University. Ragland’s fellow assistant coaches will include Kevin Kuwik and Mike Pegues. Kuwik comes to Butler after a stint at Davidson, and Pegues was Louisville’s interim head coach this past season. Butler hired Matta earlier this month to replace LaVall Jordan, who was fired after five seasons.
Free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore visited with the Indianapolis Colts Wednesday, according to multiple media reports. The five-time Pro Bowler was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 with the Patriots. After four seasons in New England, he spent last season with the Carolina Panthers. The 31-year-old played in a career-low eight games with three starts last season due to a quad injury suffered in 2020. Indianapolis needs cornerback help after trading away Rock Ya-Sin to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (yah-NEEK in-GAH-kway). In addition, another starter from last season, Xavier Rhodes, is currently a free agent.
