The Indiana Hoosiers enter the 2022 season with only one place to go. Up. Last season, IU finished as the only team in the Big Ten who didn’t get a conference win ending the season with a 2-10 record and a winless 0-9 mark in conference play. Less than a month before the season opener against Illinois, Tom Allen and the Hoosiers coaching staff have yet to make a decision on who will start at quarterback. Two signal callers, Jack Tuttle and Connor Bazelak, continue to battle for the starting job. Tuttle played six games for the Hoosiers a season ago with Bazelak transferring in from Missouri. On Tuesday, Allen said the first big tests for the two players will come on Friday when IU plays in a full scrimmage. That will be, according to the head coach, when the staff gets a good idea of who is really grasping running this offense.
The Butler men’s basketball team won their third game in Europe on Tuesday from Athens, Greece. The Bulldogs played a team featuring a collection of players from pro leagues in Greece and Spain. In the 86-76 win, transfer Manny Bates recorded a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double. The trip and chance to play against competition outside of the team is crucial for a player like Bates who hasn’t played a full college basketball game in nearly 17 months. Chuck Harris, Butler’s leading scorer from last season, finished with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He also tallied seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Head coach Thad Matta said after the game that he’s looking forward to his team’s chance to learn from the match up and make adjustments for Thursday’s game. The Bulldogs will play Tuesday’s opponent a second time on Thursday, a situation very different from not knowing anything about the collection of European players they have played against.
The Chicago Cubs gave up two runs in the top of the eighth inning surrendering a 5-4 lead to the Washington Nationals. They would go on to lose 6-5. The Chicago White Sox split a doubleheader with the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Chicago’s south side team is just a game and a half back of Cleveland and Minnesota who are tied for first in the AL Central. The Cincinnati Reds fell 6-2 to the hot New York Mets who now have a seven game lead on the Braves in the NL East. The Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 for another AL Central victory while the St. Louis Cardinals fell victim to a 22-hit night for the Colorado Rockies. The final score from Denver was 16-5.
