Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach has died.Leach suffered what the school said were complications from a heart issue on Sunday morning and was transported to a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Earlier Monday, Mississippi State said Leach was in critical condition and had his family at his side in the hospital. He died Monday night. Leach had been at Mississippi State for three seasons after stints at Texas Tech and Washington State. His success at Texas Tech made the Air Raid offense more than a novelty and ushered in a new era of passing across the country. Mike Leach was only 61 years old.

Purdue has named Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, who oversaw the nation’s No. 1 unit for much of the season, as its next head coach. Walters, 36, has spent the past two seasons at Illinois and was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach. He replaces Jeff Brohm, who left last week to become head coach at Louisville, his alma mater. Illinois’ defense rose to No. 1 in several key statistical categories this fall and finished the regular season first in fewest points allowed and second in fewest yards allowed.
