Gerry Gene Memering, 83, passed away at 9:02 am on February 12, 2023 at Daviess Community Hospital. Gerry was born on September 23, 1939 in Monroe City, IN and is the son of John and Berdine (Osborne) Memering. Gerry married Mary Dell Overstreet on October 28, 1963.
Gerry was a 1957 graduate of Washington High School. He earned an associates degree from Vincennes University in 1959 and obtained his bachelor’s degree in agriculture economics from Purdue University in 1963. He served in the Air National Guard out of Terre Haute and spent time in France during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. Gerry was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over fifty years and was involved in the Lamplighters Sunday School class. He worked at the Federal Land Bank for twenty years then for twenty years at Old National Bank serving farm loans throughout the area. All during this time he worked at Memering Farms, the family farm north of Washington, first with his father and later with his son John, grandsons Reid, Gage, and Rylan, and nephews Scott and Gary Arthur. In later years he was the “chuckwagon,” bringing meals to the farm employees during the busy seasons. Gerry was known by many as “Chief.” He was a regular at the White Steamer for more than fifty years and would often eat breakfast and lunch there. He was also a member of the ROMEOs (Really Old Men Eating Out) and enjoyed their Thursday lunch gatherings. He loved his family deeply, and loved spending winters at their house in Bradenton, FL. Gerry could often be seen in one of his favorite denim shirts driving a white Chevy pickup truck.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Dell Memering of Washington; daughters, Mary Jean Gardner and her husband Heath of Vincennes, Lori DeWall and her husband Everett of Freeport, IL, son, John R. Memering and his wife Courtney of Washington; his grandchildren, Grant and Ethan Gardner, Libby DeWall Reid and her husband Dallas, Holly DeWall Swords and her husband Ben, and Reid, Gage and Rylan Memering; and his sister, Joyce Goodwin and her husband Bill of Washington. Gerry is preceded in death by his parents, John and Berdine Memering.
Friends may visit with Gerry’s family from 3-8 pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St., Washington, IN. Gerry’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home with Joe Singleton and Pastor Gerald Turner officiating.
