Washington School Board members awarded contracts for the renovation of Hatchet Hollow at a specially called meeting Saturday morning. The special public session was added to an already scheduled Board work session to give contractors more lead time in procuring necessary supplies and to get an early start on the project. Tabor Owens of Washington was the only bidder with a base bid of $2,894,874. The Board approved two of eight alternate bids: a $14,000 option calling for metal roofing rather than standard asphalt shingles and a less expensive option for the bleacher foundations at a bid of $68,000. The other alternate bids will be considered separately at the Board’s regular March meeting.
The renovation calls for new locker rooms, home bleachers, and a press box. The field will be a turf field and will be marked for both football and soccer. The Hatchet Hollow renovation also contains an eight-lane all-weather track, returning the track to the high school campus area. The renovated multi-sport facility will also allow Washington to host larger track meets and soccer tournaments, as well as elementary, junior high, and high school football games. It is hoped the renovated Hatchet Hollow will be ready for the first home football game in August.
