Shoals High School in Indiana has a unique agriculture and shop class led by teacher Ben Kent. He believes in a hands-on approach to education, and when he started teaching five years ago, he transformed an empty field behind the school into a farm. The farm project was only possible with the support of the community, and Kent’s class got to work building a barn. The students did the majority of the work during class time, and it took them two years to finish it. The students and Kent have also built a greenhouse, planted an orchard, and built walking trails and sidewalks. Kent and his students give back to the school and community by selling eggs, whole hogs, and sausage, and the money raised goes back to the class to continue to grow and improve the farm. The completion of the barn will be celebrated on Saturday, May 13 at Shoals High School, with a hog roast, games, and other activities.
