Washington High School’s Civil Engineering and Architecture class presented and explained their end-of-year projects to local community members and parents Thursday morning. Civil Engineering and Architecture instructor Joe Fuhrman told the community members that each group of students was shown an empty lot in Washington. The students were told to design a 10,000-square-foot building for the lot. Other specifications were that the building would house two businesses, including one drive-thru facility. The students had to research the lot, and the building had to meet all state and local guidelines and specifications. The five student groups designed innovative buildings using green technology to minimize potential utility costs. The proposed businesses ranged from a steak house to an events center. Several included a restaurant with an arcade. Mayor David Rhoads told the students he was very impressed with the projects and hoped the students would bring their ideas, talents, and skills back to Washington after they complete their education. Several of the students in the class said they planned to use what they had learned in the CEA class and study engineering in college. The Civil Engineering and Architecture class is one of the unique educational opportunities that Washington High School offers WHS students.
