On Tuesday morning, a police shooting occurred in Terre Haute, resulting in the death of an armed suspect. The incident took place at U.S. Lawns, 1309 North Fruitridge Ave. At approximately 7 a.m., the Terre Haute police responded to a report of an armed, barricaded person inside the business. The suspect pointed a firearm at employees and made threatening statements, prompting the immediate call to 911. Upon locating the suspect in a storage building, officers gave loud verbal commands for him to put down the weapon and surrender. Despite attempts to negotiate with the suspect for over two hours, he refused to comply. Unexpectedly, the suspect exited the building and pointed a firearm at two uniformed officers, who responded by shooting the suspect. The wounded man was treated on the scene by Terre Haute Fire Department medics before being transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The two involved officers from the Terre Haute Police Department have been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure following officer-involved shootings. The Vigo County School Corp. was alerted to the situation and took precautions, moving all athletic practices inside the school. There was no active threat to students, staff, or the campus during the incident. Further details, including the names of those involved, are yet to be released. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will follow once the Indiana State Police completes its review.
