Melvin “Sarge” Wendell, 89, of Vincennes, IN passed away on September 23, 2023. He was born in Goodland, KS to the late Hershal and Thelma (Vanover) Wendell. Melvin proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Marine Corp. and continued for 30 years before being honorable discharged as a Staff Sargant. While in the Marine reserves he worked for Ridgeview Homes for 3 years and Vincennes Steel for 25 years. He also worked for the local Ambulance services for 5 years. Melvin married the love of his life Rosalee Williams on January 22, 1955.
Melvin was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was also a member of the Ham Radio Club and the Iron Worker Union 585. In his free time, Melvin enjoyed fishing, squirrel hunting, spending time with his family, reading western novels, learning about military history and watching John Wayne westerns. He will be deeply missed.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Benny Wendell, Aretta Olson, Margaret Lavadure, and Burton Farrell.
He is survived by his wife, of 68 years, Rosalee Wendell; daughters Diana Adams, Joretta (Scott) Bosecker, Melinda Wendell; grandchildren Joshua Adams, Jeremy (Lonny) Adams, Kim (Wesley) Abney, Garrett Bosecker; great-grandchildren Andrew, Meredith, Lily Adams; brother Carl Wendell; nephew Paul (Cheryl) Arens; great-niece Andrea (Todd) Sandberg; and a great-great-nephew.
Goodwin-Sievers is honored to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Wendell. Visitation will be held October 9, 2023, from 11am to service time. A funeral service will be held October 9, 2023, at 1pm with burial at Memorial Park with full military honors immediately following.
