A potential disaster was avoided on Sixth Street in Jasper as a smoke detector, and the quick actions of first responders prevented extensive damage to a residence yesterday morning. Authorities received a call around 7:38 a.m. about a possible structure fire at 505 Sixth Street. The caller mentioned seeing flames beneath the door of a closet in an upstairs apartment, prompted by a smoke detector’s alert. The damages were confined to the closet in the upstairs apartment. The road was temporarily closed for precautionary measures. The Jasper Fire Department, with 28 firefighters and three trucks, spent about 40 minutes on the scene. No injuries were reported.
