Barbara J. Thompson, 89, formerly of Coon Hunters Road in Bruceville, passed away peacefully at 10:20 pm on December 2, 2023, at Bridge Pointe Health Campus. Barbara was born in Johnson Township on May 19, 1934, to the late Alfred Lee and Minnie (Harvey) Swing. She attended school in Decker and was a 1952 graduate of Vincennes Lincoln High School. Barbara married Charles R. Thompson on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953, in Anchorage, Alaska. They were married until his death on May 14, 2006.
She worked several years at the Diana Shop on Main St, and she was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aide until she was not able. Barbara was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Barbara is survived by her sister Anna Marie Cooper of Vincennes and sister-in-law’s Loretta Thompson of Aberdeen, MD, Janice Russo of Hamilton, OH, Beverly Tabler of Vincennes, Carol Hunter of Vincennes, Mary Swing of Ocala, Fl; her niece and caregiver Brenda Brocksmith of Freelandville, as well as many nieces and nephews on both Swing and Thompson sides of her family. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles “Charlie” Thompson, sisters Mary Frances Vantlin, Ruth Cooper, Infant sister Emma and brothers Paul and Billy Ray Swing. The Thompson family would like to thank Aunt Bobbies special neighbor Vera Teising and Pastor Maxwell for his continued visits while she was home bound.
A graveside service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Memorial Park Cemetery Tower II Mausoleum with Pastor Ron Maxwell officiating. The Thompson family has requested memorial contributions be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 707 N. 8th St., Vincennes, IN 47591 or Good Samaritan Hospice, 601 S. 9th Street, Vincennes, IN 47591.
