Portage – On Monday at 3:45 p.m., a 911 call reported a crash on I-94 at the Salt Creek overpass, one mile east of the Portage exit in Porter County. Two local fishermen, exploring fishing spots along Salt Creek, discovered a crashed vehicle. Upon closer inspection, they found the driver, initially thought to be lifeless, was alive but trapped. The quick-thinking fishermen called 911, leading to the response of Portage and Burns Harbor Fire Departments. After a challenging extrication, the driver, identified as Matthew R. Reum, 27, of northern Indiana, was freed and flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for severe, life-threatening injuries. The crash likely occurred around December 20th, and without the fishermen’s intervention, the outcome could have been different. The incident emphasizes the importance of communication about travel plans and the need for emergency supplies in vehicles.
