A commercial turkey farm in Daviess County has reported a positive case of avian flu, prompting the quarantine of a flock of 13,071 birds. This marks Indiana’s first commercial outbreak in over a year. The disease is often transmitted by migrating waterfowl and ducks through their droppings. To contain the situation, the state has established a 10km control area covering 45 commercial flocks and 48 hobby/backyard flocks. Additionally, a 20km surveillance zone spans parts of Daviess, Martin, and Greene counties. While the reappearance of the disease is unfortunate, officials assure the public that it doesn’t pose a food safety risk, thanks to testing. The Board of Animal Health is also providing free testing for concerned bird owners with small flocks.
