As the school year begins, remember these key school bus safety rules:
Legal Requirement: It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with red lights flashing and a stop-arm extended, except on divided highways with a barrier. On such highways, only stop if you are traveling in the same direction as the bus.
Driving Tips:
Watch for children walking or biking when backing out of driveways.
Be alert in neighborhoods with school zones.
Slow down and watch for children walking, especially where there are no sidewalks.
Be cautious near bus stops, and stay alert for children running late and darting into the street.
School Bus Signals:
Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and be ready to stop.
Red flashing lights and extended stop arms mean the bus has stopped for children to get on or off. Stop and wait until the lights stop flashing and the stop arm is retracted.
For parents and children:
At the Bus Stop: Arrive at least five minutes early, wait three giant steps away from the curb, and don’t run or play.
Crossing the Street: Walk at least ten feet in front of the bus, make eye contact with the driver, and never try to pick up dropped items without informing the driver.
