Avian Influenza Confirmed in Indiana Waterfowl

dnr-9

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) as the cause of waterfowl deaths in Gibson County in December. Suspected cases of HPAI-related waterfowl deaths have also been reported in 11 other counties, including Pike County, over the past six weeks. Since 2022, Indiana has recorded 98 positive HPAI detections in waterfowl, primarily affecting snow geese and Canada geese. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states the public health risk from HPAI remains low.
