A proposed state budget could significantly reduce funding for Daviess County schools, government, and public services over the next three years. The cuts, outlined in Senate Bill 1 (2025), are part of statewide property tax adjustments impacting farmland assessments and tax credits for elderly and disabled veterans. Daviess County is projected to lose over $1.6 million by 2028, with severe cuts affecting local schools. Barr-Reeve Community Schools could see a $310,320 loss, North Daviess Community Schools a $440,300 reduction, and Washington Community Schools a $293,820 shortfall. Local municipalities will also be impacted, with Washington Civil City expected to lose over $207,000, while smaller towns such as Odon (-$39,560), Montgomery (-$21,440), and Plainville (-$11,090) will see reductions. The Daviess County Solid Waste District and fire protection districts are also facing substantial funding declines. The financial strain could force County officials and school districts to explore alternative revenue sources, including increased reliance on income taxes.
