Two Separate Ice-Related Drownings Reported in Greene County

greene-county-2

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating two separate drowning incidents that occurred Saturday in Greene County, both involving individuals falling through the ice. In the first incident, authorities were called to a private lake near Sassafras Road in Bloomfield after footprints were found leading to a hole in the ice. Using an aerial drone, Eastern Greene Fire Territory located a cell phone on the ice, and Conservation Officer divers later recovered the body of 83-year-old Louis White from 14 feet of water.

In a separate incident at Beaver Dam Lake in the Hillenbrand Fish and Wildlife Area, two 20-year-old men fell through the ice. Jasonville Police Officer Skylar Scott successfully rescued Cordell Foster using a rope throw bag, but Justin Sprang went under and never resurfaced. Divers later recovered Sprang’s body in 16 feet of water. Authorities urge extreme caution around frozen bodies of water, as unstable ice conditions pose a significant risk.
