Daviess County Museum Launches Speaker Series Ahead of America’s 250th Celebration

The Daviess County Museum is kicking off a special speaker series in 2025 titled “The Struggle for Liberty” in anticipation of America’s 250th birthday. The series will explore the development of the Indiana Territory after the Declaration of Independence and how early settlers navigated political, social, and environmental challenges. The four-part series, held at the museum at 212 E. Main St., Washington, will feature historians and experts discussing key moments in early Indiana history. Events are free to the public and include:

April 12, 1:00 PM – A George Rogers Clark Memorial ranger will recount the 1779 capture of Ft. Sackville and its impact on westward expansion.

June 14, 1:00 PM – Historian Richard Day will discuss the 1787 Northwest Ordinance and its ban on slavery in the region.

July 12, 6:00 PM – Knox County Historian Dennis Latta will examine the 1788 Vincennes Donation Lands and its role in settling Knox and Daviess Counties.

September 13, 1:00 PM – Lisa Ice-Jones of Grouseland will explore Governor William Henry Harrison’s role in territorial expansion, Tecumseh’s resistance, and the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe.
