
Sheila Jean “Preston” Heffernan, age 73, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on March 6, 2025, in Montgomery, Indiana. Born on December 4, 1951, in Washington, Indiana, Sheila was a lifelong resident of the area, known for her creative spark and her unwavering commitment to the ones she loved.
Sheila passed moments before her beloved husband, Joseph Daniel Heffernan. Survivors include her devoted daughters, Holly Jo (Brian Norris) Heffernan and Jaime (Nick) Heffernan-Clauss; her adored grandchildren, Damian (Layne) Baker, Brandon Underhill, Jesse (Ashley DeLeon) Holder, Mitchell (Adriana) Wadsworth, Samuel (Cassandra Garcia) Heffernan, and Libby (Hunter Courtney) Heffernan; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Atlas, Arlo, Emerson, Johnathan, and Bella. Sheila is also survived by her loving sister Jo Ann Harding. Her life was enriched by their presence and the joy they brought her. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Stewart and Margaret “Hedrick” Preston.
An alumni of Barr Reeve High School, Sheila graduated in 1969 and thereafter pursued her passion for helping others by attending Vincennes University for Nursing and later, Bedford Beauty College. She took pride in her work as a home health aid, offering comfort and care to those in need, and later making cabinets at Masterbrand Cabinets.
On June 19, 1971, Sheila married her sweetheart, Joseph, and together they shared a life full of laughter and song. As an ardent music lover, Sheila’s talents in songwriting and guitar-playing brought joy to many. She was known for her funny and loving nature, often being the light of any gathering. Sheila’s interests extended to playing bingo with friends, fellowship at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and, above all, spending time with her family.
Sheila’s legacy is one of love, creativity, and a touch of humor that could brighten the darkest days. Her spirit will live on in the melodies she composed, the memories she left behind, and the deep impact she made on her family and friends. Sheila Jean “Preston” Heffernan will be dearly missed but her warmth and passion for life will remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
There will be a visitation on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 11:00 to 1:00 pm at Fredrick and Son-Gill Funeral Home with service following at 1:00 pm.
