Charles Oliver “Charlie” Wright, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and mentor, departed this life on March 12, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on March 23, 1938, in Washington, Indiana, to George and Thelma “Ballow” Wright, Charlie lived a life marked by enthusiasm, kindness, and a relentless dedication to his community in his beloved hometown.

Charlie’s life was rich with love, as evidenced by his devoted family. His wife of many decades, Elvira “Harris” Wright, stood by him throughout their journey together, sharing in the joys and triumphs that life presented. His legacy continues through their children, Sheree “Wright” Joiner, Terence Wright, Charla “Wright” Davis, and Diane “Wright” Joyce (Ronnie). Charlie’s spirit sparked inspiration in the lives of his nine grandchildren – Titus Wright, Joshua Wright, Rex Labo, John Labo, Charla M. Davis, DeWayne O. Davis, Corey Joyce, Chelsea Joyce, and Kiehler Joyce- touching them with his unbounded energy and love. His youthful joy was further multiplied through his 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, who were the apples of his eye, as well as multiple nieces and nephews. Charlie is survived by his siblings James Robert Wright (Carol), Linda “Wright” Morton (John), Sheila “Wright” Rouse, and Richard Wright (Barbara), who share in the family’s pride for the life he led. He reunites in eternal rest with his parents, his beloved siblings Bertha “Wright” Outlaw and Mary “Wright” Brown, and his brother-in-law, James Rouse, who preceded him in passing.

After graduating from high school, Charlie’s work ethic and commitment to his community became evident. He was a respected employee at McCord’s and Allison’s Furniture, notable local businesses. In disparate realms of work, his reliability, and friendly demeanor became his hallmark. His solidarity with the community was further demonstrated through his involvement during his membership at his home church the Second Baptist Church, starting the James Oliver Ballow Sportmanship Award, his contributions to the Board of Community Corrections, and his mentoring within the Big Brother/Big Sister Program – many of these engagements earned him the honor of Citizen of the Year.

Coach Charlie was a familiar face on the sidelines of many sports fields, imparting his love of basketball, t-ball, football, and soccer to young athletes. As an assistant coach for Washington Catholic basketball from 1981 to 1985, he was instrumental in leading the team’s victories and success. Charlie not only helped build the community soccer program but was also pivotal in establishing athletic opportunities in the surrounding towns, leaving a lasting legacy.

Described as spirited, optimistic, and endlessly friendly, Charlie Wright lived his life as a beacon of positive influence, lighting the way for others with his infectious smile and unwavering spirit. His love for life and ability to energize those around him remains an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Charlie’s life is a testament to the impact one individual can have on their community and the many hearts they can touch simply by being their authentic self.
