The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is alerting residents to a toll-related text scam attempting to deceive Hoosiers into making fraudulent payments. Scammers are sending fake messages claiming to be from INDOT or toll service providers, warning recipients of “final notice” unpaid tolls and potential fines, registration suspension, or legal action. The messages include a payment link, which INDOT urges the public not to open. This type of scam, known as “smishing,” has been reported since early 2024, with the FBI receiving over 2,000 complaints. Victims are encouraged to report fraudulent messages to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
