Some parents are concerned after threats or firearms were discovered this week at numerous Central Indiana schools.
A 17-year-old Southport High School student was detained on Tuesday for possessing a pistol and a knife in school. According to a statement provided by Southport High School, the student apprehended there Tuesday for carrying a knife and pistol has been suspended, and officials are investigating criminal charges.
A 15-year-old kid was detained Thursday at Anderson High School for possessing a loaded firearm. A second threat was also made against Anderson High School for Friday. Anderson High School was closed on Friday due to inclement weather, according to school authorities. Some parents were anxious since other Anderson Community Schools stayed open on Friday. All Anderson Community Schools have enhanced security measures in place on Friday. A thorough search was conducted at Anderson High School Friday after the student was arrested Thursday. School officials said no guns, ammunition or other weapons were found. Anderson High School will have counselors available for students when they return to classes Monday.
Brownsburg parents were alarmed Friday when a text purportedly from the school administration began spreading on social media. The bogus communication mentioned a threat made against Brownsburg High School. In Brownsburg, several parents arrived to pick up their children after receiving a text message that appeared to be from the school and began spreading on social media concerning a threat to Brownsburg High School. A school official acknowledged the text was a forgery. According to the spokeswoman, a threat was made on Thursday that investigators assessed was not serious.
