Brady Byrd and Brayden Garland Honored at School Board Meeting; Teachers Retiring, New Teacher Hires, Hatchet Hollow Renovation, and More

Two WHS students were honored by the Washington School Board at Wednesday’s board meeting. WHS junior Brady Byrd was recognized for his outstanding wrestling season. Byrd compiled a 34-3 record and advanced to the second round of the semi-state before being defeated by the eventual champion. Byrd was also recognized for his academic success. Also honored was WHS senior Brayden Garland. Garland, a member of the WHS band, has been offered a spot in the 2023 World Class Drum Corps Phantom Regiment. The Phantom Regiment has been a DCI World Champion and top 12 finalist every year since 1974.
In regular business, the board approved retirement requests from Bernie Butcher and Nikki Sparks. The Board also approved the employment of Maggie Shaffer as a part-time elementary secretary; Michel Bello and Hope Sydow as elementary aides; Kevin Buckley as a bus monitor and driver; Kathie Wonder as a substitute driver; Austin Fox as an assistant baseball coach; and Madison Austin as a student teaching intern.
The board also approved trip requests for the FCCLA to attend the State Leadership Conference in Muncie; four state and local Beta Club officers from Washington to accept an invitation to attend the Mississippi State Beta Convention; the WHS Robotics Team to compete in the District, State, and National competitions; the FFA to attend the Farm Show in Louisville; and the WHS Choir to travel to Chicago.
Superintendent Kevin Frank reminded board members that bids for the Hatchet Hollow renovation would be opened at 11 a.m. on February 23. The Board will then meet in a special session at 8:00 a.m. on February 25 to award contracts for the project. The next regular Board meeting will be on March 16 at 7 p.m.
