A nationwide emergency alert test is scheduled for today to ensure the effectiveness of emergency communication systems. During this test, an emergency alert will be broadcast on all cellphones, wireless devices, radios, and televisions. The test consists of two parts: a 30-minute signal sent to radios and televisions as part of the Emergency Alert System (EAS), and a similar signal sent to all consumer cellphones through the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system. The nationwide WEA test will begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET and last for around 30 minutes. Wireless phones that are WEA-compatible, switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and linked to a participating wireless provider should receive the test message. The message that will appear on consumers’ phones during the test will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” This test is a critical step in ensuring that emergency alert systems are prepared to keep the public informed in the event of a real emergency.
