Evansville, IN — An investigation is underway following the death of an inmate at the Vanderburgh County Jail on October 30. The incident unfolded when a confinement officer assigned to Housing Unit B1 observed an inmate in distress and subsequently discovered the inmate unresponsive in their cell. The officer requested assistance, and life-saving efforts were initiated, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR. At 9:45 AM, resuscitation efforts were discontinued under the direction of a physician. While no foul play is suspected, in accordance with Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office policy, an external agency will conduct an investigation into the death. The deceased inmate was a 61-year-old male with pre-existing health conditions for which he was under regular medical care. The coroner’s office will release further updates regarding the inmate’s identity and the cause of death.
