Indiana Senate Passes Bill to Legalize ‘Happy Hour’, Awaits Governor’s Approval

A bill to legalize “Happy Hour” in Indiana is on its way to Governor Eric Holcomb’s desk after passing the State Senate with minimal opposition. The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Kyle Walker, would permit restaurants, bars, or craft manufacturers to offer alcoholic beverages at reduced prices during certain times of the day.
Walker stated that the bill has broad support from the food and tourism industries, as it could attract more patrons, boost food sales, and aid an industry still recovering from pandemic-related losses. However, the bill comes with restrictions, including a limit of four hours per day and 15 hours per week for reduced prices, and a prohibition on happy hours between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.
The ban on happy hours in Indiana dates back to a 1985 law aimed at reducing drunk driving. If signed by Gov. Holcomb, the bill would become law on July 1st.
