Legal Battle Ensues Over Coach Burkett’s Suspension

In November last year, the South Knox School Board voted to void Coach David Burkett’s coaching contract after he was suspended by the IHSAA for two seasons for alleged violations of the limited contact rule. Burkett appealed the decision but was denied. In a lawsuit filed in Knox Circuit Court on February 16th, Burkett is seeking an expedited judicial review and reversal of the IHSAA commissioner’s decision and punishment, claiming they were not fair or logical interpretations of the IHSAA’s rules or Indiana law. The suit also requests declaratory judgments that his suspension is illegal and in disregard of the facts. If an expedited review is not possible, Burkett asks for an injunction of the suspension before the 2024-25 school year so he can seek coaching opportunities. No further action has been taken at this time.
