Sunrise Coal announced on Wednesday its intention to lay off dozens of employees this spring. According to a WARN notice filed with the state, Sunrise Coal plans to lay off 112 workers at its Indiana operations. The layoffs are scheduled to begin on April 23 and will impact the company’s locations in Freelandville, Oaktown, and Prosperity. Indiana’s WARN Act protects workers facing layoffs or plant closures by requiring employers to provide advance notice to employees when aware of impending closures or layoffs. Sunrise Coal is Indiana’s second-largest coal producer, mining more than six million tons of coal at its Oaktown complex each year.
