As Indiana’s 94,000 farmers begin the harvest season, motorists can expect to encounter slow moving farm equipment on rural roads and highways. State agencies are urging drivers to stay alert and patient to ensure safety on the roads this fall. In 2022, four crashes involving farm equipment resulted in one fatality, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. To prevent accidents, motorists are advised to follow these safety tips:
Stay alert, as farm equipment is often wide and may take up most of the road.
Pass with caution and never in a “No Passing Zone” or near intersections, railroad crossings, or bridges.
Avoid tailgating; farm vehicles may stop unexpectedly.
