IHSAA has approved significant changes to Rule 19, which governs student-athlete eligibility and transfers. The Executive Committee gave approval during a meeting on February 21, with full ratification expected at the Board of Directors meeting on May 5.
Under the proposed changes:
First-time transfers between IHSAA member schools will retain full eligibility if completed within a student’s first six semesters of high school.
Second transfers or transfers from non-IHSAA schools will follow previous eligibility rules. If a student returns to their original IHSAA school within 365 days, they will regain full eligibility.
These changes, set to take effect on June 1, align with Indiana’s School Choice initiatives and will be discussed further at Area Principals Meetings in April. Washington Athletic Director and IHSAA Board Member Larry Cochren will provide further insight on these changes next weekend on Focus on the Community on WAMW.
