Work set to start on new Evansville onshore casino

Construction scheduled to be complete at the end of next year.

(AP) The Tropicana Evansville casino says it will break ground next week on a $50 million facility that will be the first of Indiana’s riverboat casinos to move to an onshore site.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports , the casino will have a July 19 ceremony to mark the start of work on the 75,000 square-foot entertainment complex. That will include 45,000 square feet devoted to gambling.

The new facility is expected to be completed in December 2017.

A state law enacted last year allows Indiana’s 10 riverboats to build new casinos on land near their current locations.

Tropicana announced plans in November for building the new casino between its existing hotels and across the street from the current riverboat. The riverboat will close.
