Lena Dunn Elementary gets 3 quarters of a million dollars in grant funds

The staff at Washington’s Lena Dunn Elementary has been selected to receive a five year $750,000 Department of Education School Improvement Grant.   In making the announcement at Thursday’s Washington School Board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Kevin Frank said Lena Dunn was the only school in Indiana to receive the early learning model award.  Frank said the grant was made possible by the hard work and extra hours put in by Lena Dunn’s principal, Jeanette Lobeck, her leadership team, and the Lena Dunn staff.

Frank said the grant would allow for the implementation of a pre-school at Lena Dunn.  The Assistant Superintendent said Lena Dunn’s students and their parents should be very excited.

In other business, the School Board received a report from financial consultants Umbaugh and Associates on a 1.4 million dollar bond issue to provide funds for aging buses in the school’s transportation fleet. The report said the general obligation bond issue would not increase the debt service tax levy. Transportation Director Gary Puckett told the Board that several leased buses were approaching the state’s recommended 12 year age limit and the agreement on those busses would end this year. The Board agreed to a resolution to move forward with the bond issue.
The Board also adopted the school calendar for the next school year. Superintendent Dr. Dan Roach said the calendar is similar to the current calendar.
