State Sen. Eric Bassler (R-Washington) gathered with fellow legislators Tuesday at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the Indiana General Assembly.
Organization Day is marked by the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. The day also provides each Senate and House of Representatives caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially reconvenes Jan. 3.
Bassler commented one of the issues to be worked on this session are updating Indiana’s alcohol laws. Bassler does serve on the Alcohol Code Revision Committee. He points out that when it comes to laws on Sunday sales in Indiana, when you say Sunday sales are not allowed, that is somewhat of a misnomer…
Bassler went on to say that not allowing liquor stores, convenience stores, grocery and box stores to sell alcohol creates an unlevel playing field…and a somewhat incoherent result
Bassler say the Alcohol Code Revision Committee has some more meetings in December to discuss the issue furthur.
Bassler adds that other topics to be covered by the legislature in 2018 include looking for ways to improve the quality of K-12 and higher education system, and continuing to tackle the opioid epidemic.
Bassler encourages residents of Senate District 39 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Bassler can be reached via email at Senator.Bassler@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
