A reported hate crime at Vincennes University may have been a false report.
The VU Police Department has referred the case to the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office for review and potential criminal charges for reporting false information.
The case began last Friday when just before noon an incident deemed a Hate Crime was reported to VU police. A student said he was walking on campus to the dining hall 8-am when a man with a white head covering and brandishing a firearm threatened the student making racial slurs. The student was told to go back to his dorm, he said he did. VU Police Chief Bob Dunham says an extensive investigation including interviews and review of security video shows the student was in his dorm at the time the alleged incident took place until he left before noon to make a report at the college police station.
The VU Facebook page is reporting that the prosecutor, state police and FBI have been briefed on evidence in the case and VU police has requested the prosecutor to invite the state police to conduct an independent investigation.
