The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department has put out a scam alert on what’s known as a “Grandparent Scam”. A caller will tell a grandparent they are the legal representative of a grandchild and claim they’ve been injured, are in jail or in legal trouble and ask for money to be wired to them.
That’s what happened in Dubois County when a scammer left a return call back number for the resident. When they called back there was no answer, but a short time later the grandparent did get a call back claiming their grandchild was in trouble. The scammer hung up when confronted about it all being a lie.
Officials say never give out personal information over the phone or wire or transfer money and just hang up if you believe a call is a scam artist.
