School Treasurer explains accounting changes

Changes in state and federal laws will affect accounting procedures for Indiana schools.  That is what Washington School Treasurer Carrie Alford told the Washington School Board at Thursday’s meeting.

Alford emphasized that the change is in accounting and the dollar amount in the budget won’t change and the changes won’t affect the operations of the schools.

The new system replaces the General Fund with the Education Fund, and combines the Capital Projects, Transportation, and Bus Replacement Funds into an Operations Fund.

The Education Fund will receive funding from the State.  The Operations Fund and Debt Service Funds will be funded through property taxes.   Alford said that another change is that, in the past, educational expenditures were reported on the corporation level, but under the new laws the accounting must be on a building-by-building basis.

In personnel matters, the Board accepted resignations from elementary teachers Beverly Bouchie, Aimee Farhar, Rachel Kessen, and Hannah Schickel.  The Board reluctantly accepted the resignation of Transportation Director Gary Puckett.  The Board thanked Puckett for his 28 years of service to the Washington School System.

The Board approved hiring elementary teachers Larry Huntley, Emily Howes, Riley Mehringer, and Alexis Nelson.  Also approved was the      appointment of Lori Lundy and Regina Gebert to the Washington Library Board.
