Childhood obesity rise may be due to tech

Daviess County’s Child Obesity rate is 2 points higher than the state average.  Daviess County’s rate is 15.9% according to numbers from 2016 and ’17.

Program/Fitness Director of the Daviess County Family YMCA, Darin Hornaday talked to the Washington Times Herald about the numbers.  He says summer there’s a tendency for kids to get less exercise, because they are on summer break and we now live in an age where kids are on their phones, computers or video game consoles more than being active.

He says a good goal to have is to get kids active for about an hour a day.   He says it just needs to be some type of physical activity, nothing strenuous.  He says don’t worry if kids can’t quite make it an hour at first, it’s ok, he says the important thing is to start.  He also recommended families exercising together in whatever activity everyone enjoys.
