(AP) — Two elderly northeastern Indiana Amish women have been sentenced to two years on probation and ordered not to practice midwifery or medicine after authorities learned they were acting as midwives without any certifications or formal training.
An Adams County judge sentenced 74-year-old Sylvia C. Eicher and 73-year-old Lydiann S. Schwartz on Friday. Both pleaded guilty last month to practicing midwifery without a license.
Police said the woman administered veterinary medicine to women during child birth, and at least one child died after their care. They were arrested in May. Eicher said at the time they had delivered thousands of babies in the Amish community.
