The government could end up shutting down again if a funding deal is not reached by Friday. Sen. Todd Young did not say for sure whether or not he would support Pres. Trump declaring a national emergency to get funding for a border wall.
“I think we need to have border security. I think Democrats need to come together with us and embrace the position they had before last election. I also think it needs to be done in a way that’s consistent with our Constitution,” said Young, in a Monday appearance on WISH TV in Indy.
Young said he believes in the physical border wall.
“In the United States Marine Corps, I served in an area of Arizona with a lot of narco trafficking and human trafficking. There was later a point where a border wall was selected or implemented in that area and trafficking went way down in that area over the next decade, 95 percent.”
Young said that experience informs his support for the wall, which Trump now says will be a smart, steel barrier.
Young said he is also hoping Pres. Trump will sign a bill that will allow the FFA to update its charter and help students who are members.
The National FFA Organization’s Federal Charter Amendments Act updates the FFA’s charter to allow for regional diversity among student officer vice presidents. Additionally, the legislation provides governing flexibility for national officers in order to reduce operational delays caused by vacant seats, said a news release.
“This helps modernize that program…so that our young people who go through FFA will be prepared for careers not just on the farm, but in the tech industry, in the services industry,” said Young.
Another bill he hopes the president will also sign a bill that extends the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail along Indiana’s southern border, including Clarksville, Indiana, where the two men started recruiting for their exploration mission near the Falls of the Ohio.
