(AP) — The Indiana Court of Appeals has affirmed an eight-year prison term for a man who pleaded guilty to neglect in the death of a malnourished 9-year-old boy with cerebral palsy.
The decision filed Wednesday notes “mitigating factors” for 59-year-old Hubert Kraemer “are far outweighed by the horrendous fact that Kraemer starved his disabled child to death.” Kraemer was sentenced in December and argued the sentence was too harsh.
The boy, Cameron Hoopingarner, was blind and weighed less than 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) when officers found him in February 2017 at the family’s home near Fontanet, in Vigo County.
The boy’s primary caregiver was Kraemer’s wife, Robin Kraemer. She was convicted in 2017. The Kraemers’ adult son and his girlfriend also pleaded guilty.
