Commissioners discuss sheet metal and hoof damage

The Daviess County Commissioners  finalized a contract with Midwest Roofing – Sheet Metal to place the stone-ply covering on the County Government Center.  The stone-ply covering was removed from the contract with Jasper Lumber when that company insisted on using wood to attach the stone sheeting to the exterior of the building.  The manufacturer’s recommendation was to use stainless steel.   The new contract is ostensibly for the same $193,000 as was in the original contract.   The exterior completion date is Oct. 31.  The interior of the building is still in limbo after the Commissioners moved to terminate Jasper Lumber’s general as the project’s general contractor after a series of delays.
Also yesterday the commissioners approved the renewal of the food service contract for the Security Center.
The Commissioners received bids on asphalt for 2020.  The bids were opened and taken under advisement.   The Commissioners also voted to allow Highway Superintendent Phil Cornelius to purchase a pocket to place a bridge over a low water crossing on CR 400 S at the cost $52,000.

Most of the discussion at the meeting concerned the on-going concern of the effect of horse shoes on the hard paved county roads and the cost of buggy permits.  The Commissioners have reached out to the Amish community’s Safety Committee.  The concern will be on the Commissioners agenda in October.
