Public hearing held on $ for new wastewater requirement

The Washington City Council held several public hearings last night.  One centered around the grant application from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs toward the construction of a phosphorus removal facility at the Sanitation Department on Clark Road.   Answering questions, Sanitation Superintendent Scott Rainey told the Council that the facility is required by State and Federal Environmental Protection Agencies.   Rainey said the phosphorus basically comes from detergents, soap, cleaners, and fertilizers and communities are now required to remove the chemical from waste water.   The grant, if approved, would provide $700,000 with the City’s share being $1.3 million.
